The Case for Laptop Locks
Laptop Locks are a
must-have especially if you a student at a college. I recently ran into
a situation where my laptop
was stolen. I am here at the university and studying and could not
imagine this will happen. My laptop was
left on my bed when I got the call for a Saturday night party down the
hall. I had my laptop with
me and I ran into the hallway to check out this party.
The
RA on the floor was having a little surprise birthday even for his
roommate and invited others from the floor.
I
did not put my laptop away
and left it lying on my bed. Upon my return the laptop was
gone. This is not to alarm you or create concerns about college theft
but, my laptop also
had information about my family financials as I try to assist my old
parents with their bookkeeping. If my laptop only
had information about my school work or was only used to access the
internet, it won’t be a big deal but it had family pictures and other
keepsakes.
This happened
on May 21, 2009, just before summer holidays. I was totally devastated
and could not must the guts to tell my parents. I keep it to myself
knowing that my overly conservative mom had just bought the laptop lock
for me and I decided not to take it saying it was more of a
nuisance. Now I am ashamed to face my mom and admit she was right.
So,
I go home and did not say anything not because my parents will yell or
beat me or anything just because I knew there was a laptop lock
sitting somewhere in the house that I could have used to
secure my laptop.
I
arrived home for summer of 2009 and my mom as always was very happy to
see me. She came to the airport and picked me and we hugged and
cried as always. Dad was not there as he does not like those moments.
As we were driving home from the airport, my mom is always asking
questions about school, relationships, my friends and all the stuff
that I brought and all that kinds of information that really only mom
cares to know. I would give her the usually answer about everything
because I know we will have long conversation. We talked about my
latest boy friend. Jason, what a great guy!!! I met Jason in the party
that I went with my friend Jessica. At the party I met Jason and I was
not so sure he was going to talk to me. I kept visiting with my friends
and then our eyes met. I avoided his contact but then as fate would
have it, there was something there and we both just kind of laughed and
winked. I did not talk to him that night but went to my room
just happy that I met (kinda) met this guy. When it was time for me to
do my assignments, I could not find my laptop.
It was gone. Here my happiness turned into sorrow. I called my friend
Jessica who is known for coming into my room and taking stuff. I asked
if she had my laptop and
she said no. I called my roommate who too had spent the night at her
cousin’s place and she just laughed and said the laptop is
gone.
This
is not possible, it was given to me by my mom for my twentieth birthday
and she said to me it was a present for maintaining
good grades. Here it is stolen and never to be found. The sad thing is
that I can guess it was stolen by someone on campus. I wonder how many laptops are
stolen each year without laptop locks.
Well, I got home, unpacked my bag, gave Dad a big hug, teased
him about his weight and he teased me about anything he could say as a
comeback. He looked at me and right away knew there was an air of
happiness in my life.
My mom is busy unpacking my stuff and dad went immediately to
the gusto. Hey Sarah, any guys in your life lately? Well, I said to
him, dad there is this guy I met in a dorm party. His name is Jason and
he is a relay nice guy and we are not serious or anything but we have
gone out a couple of times. I won’t’; called him a boy friend or
anything but we will see how it goes. That was the extent of the
conversation with dad.
Mom still
unpacking my bag asked the tough question. Hey Sarah, did you bring
back your laptop? Hmm, mom it
is long story and I want to save the story for another moment. Let’s
not ruin this moment. OK. Mom would not take that for an answer, keep
the story short and give me the reader’s digest version. I replied and
said well it was stolen. If you know my mom, this is her moment to
gloat, this is her moment to say, “I told you so” but this time she
just gave me the eye. This hurts. I was expecting the long winded
speech of I told you so, I even went and bought you the laptop lock which you left
mere. I knew this was going to happen. I was expecting her to just keep
going. But this time she decided the eye was all that I needed.
This was
painful to me and I know how much this laptop meant
to the
family. Knowing that it is gone, knowing that it has our family
mementos, my family financials, is painful.
I am writing this article as a search for my laptop.
It is a Dell Latitude E5500, red cover and it is only two
years old. If anyone can find it, I will pay them five hundred dollars.
Morale of the story, get a laptop lock and
even better morale of the story, always listen to mom.
